July 8, 2019, New Orleans, LA – In the five years since it began, the Kelsey Bradley Favrot Memorial 5k Run/Walk has raised over a quarter of a million dollars to expand neuro-oncology care at LSU Health New Orleans Department of Neurosurgery. Neuro-oncologist Aaron Mammoser has been seeing patients in New Orleans for nearly three years now and is overseeing numerous clinical trials in adult brain tumor patients. These fundraising efforts are making a tremendous difference in the care and comfort of patients and families dealing with a brain cancer diagnosis.
But we can do more. There is a serious need to expand pediatric neuro-oncology resources in the Gulf South. All proceeds from the 5K will go toward this effort at LSU Neurosurgery in New Orleans.
“Our community’s youngest brain tumor patients deserve a specialist too,” said Dr. Mammoser ,who is the Kelsey Bradley Favrot Chair in Neuro-Oncology at LSU Health New Orleans School of Medicine’s Department of Neurosurgery. “No one, let alone a family with a child with brain cancer, should ever feel a need to leave town for treatment. All cancer patients need and deserve the support of family and friends here at home,” he said.
The 5th annual fundraising 5k is Sunday, Oct. 13 at Audubon Park Shelter #10 in New Orleans. Pre-registration entry fee is $30 with a discount for teams of three or more. There is a reduced rate for youths and seniors of only $15;. A special $10 fee for youths and school teams does not include t-shirt. Save $5.00 on registration fees by creating a group or team.
